Visual Arts & Design Academy (VADA)

Application required

Project-based, career-focused visual arts and design integrated with rigorous college-prep academics (a 'school-within-a-school').

A California Partnership Academy since 1999 (funded jointly by the CA Dept. of Education, Santa Barbara Unified, and the nonprofit Friends of VADA), serving ~200-225 students in grades 9-12 with collaborative teaching teams, mentorship, workplace learning, and industry partnerships.

Entry: Apply for Pre-VADA entry in 9th grade; continue 10th-12th.
Selectivity: Interest-based with lottery if oversubscribed (not academically competitive); ~200+ students.
How to apply: Submit the official SBHS CTE Pathway/Academy Common Interest Form (window ~November through March 1). 9th-grade (Pre-VADA) placement uses a balanced 50/50 pathway-access model required by state ed code and may use a lottery if interest exceeds capacity. Out-of-district/transfer students must first complete the district transfer process by mid-January. Continuing Pre-VADA students in good standing get priority.

Multimedia Arts & Design (MAD) Academy

Media arts and technology — traditional and interdisciplinary, project-based learning in the evolving media-arts field.

How to apply: Application/enrollment specifics not verified online; like other SBHS CTE pathways it is likely entered via the SBHS Academy Common Interest Form — confirm with the school.
